Circumbaikal Railway (28 of 38)

In scope, complexity, beauty, and price of work, this part of the Trans-Siberian Railway has no equal among other railways in Russia. It is a narrow strip along Baikal's shoreline and is the brightest example of harmonic coexistence of human and nature. Construction began in 1891 by the order of Czar Alexander III; and in 1905 it was commissioned into permanent operation between the station Baikal and Slyudyanka.
