In 1735, the first Governor of the French East India Company, Mahé de Labourdonnais, decided to establish Port Louis as the main harbor of the island, Turtle Bay then became more significant. Around 1740, a naval arsenal was built, as well as an iron foundry and a gunpowder factory. In order to procure water for the workshops, a dam was built across the ‘Rivière Citron’ in 1743. This dam is still existent today.
From a 30 min walk, guests can travel back in time along the coast line to River Citron to explore ancient ruins of Balaclava. A safe pathway for family together discovery. Who knows, you might meet with the Mauritian green sea turtle Chelonia Mydas at this former breeding grounds.
