Columbia River Crossing
Columbia River Crossing
Columbia River Crossing, the Interstate Bridge, is actually made up of two side-by-side bridges. The northbound bridge was built in 1917 and the southbound bridge in 1958. After serving both Washington and Oregon so well for over 90 years, it is time to replace the two structures to best meet the next century's growing travel needs across the Columbia River. Today, the Interstate Bridge carries 135,000 vehicles per day. A replacement bridge will be designed to address future traffic demand, eliminate the need for bridge lifts and meet current seismic standards. This 14-foot wide, shared-use concrete trail is the crowning jewel of Vancouver's Columbia River Waterfront Renaissance, connecting the downtown area to the city's long-neglected shoreline. The Water Resources Education Center lies along the trail, as do the Old Apple Tree, Marine Park, Kaiser Viewing Tower and Shipyards, and Tidewater Cove. Along the way are shops, restaurants and great places to picnic, play or just enjoy the view. The trail will continue east with the future Wintler Park extension. Esther Short Park
Esther Short Park
Esther Short Park in Vancouver, Washington was established in 1853, and is the oldest public park in the state of Washington. It has been called the "oldest public park in the West" by some, but was created after Lafayette Park in St. Louis, Missouri. It is located in the city's downtown between West Columbia and 8th Street. It was bequeathed to the city in 1862, and includes a children's playground, a rose garden, a large fountain system made of columnar basalt, a bell/clock tower, and the historic Slocum House. The park also houses the outdoor farmer's market each weekend. Photo courtesy of the Southwest Washington Convention & Visitors Bureau
Fort Vancouver
Fort Vancouver
Fort Vancouver was a 19th century fur trading outpost along the Columbia River that served as the headquarters of the Hudson's Bay Company in the company's Columbia District (which covered the northern half of the region known to Americans as the Oregon Country). Named for Captain George Vancouver, the fort was located on the northern bank of the Columbia River in present-day Vancouver, Washington, near Portland, Oregon. Today, a full-scale replica of the fort, with internal buildings, has been constructed and is open to the public. Photo courtesy of the Southwest Washington Convention & Visitors Bureau
