Hotel History

The Bristol Hotel in Vienna Austria is not only the hotel where the Prince of Wales, Edward VIII and Wallis Simpson vacationed at the height of their affair and subsequently, but also where Noble Peace Prize winner Bertha con Suttner met her political rival, American president Theodore Roosevelt, and where George Gershwin worked on "An American in Paris." Moreover, our location across from the Vienna State Opera means that the biggest names in opera choose us as their Viennese home away from home.

Between 1916 and 1945, the Hotel Bristol was so large that it extended the entire block from Kärntner Ring 1 to 7. At that time the hotel still boasted the Grill Room, a Titanic-style dining room. Neither the room nor the ship exists any longer. With its prominent address of Kärntner Ring 1, today the Hotel Bristol is the hotel next to the Vienna State Opera, with 150 rooms and suites.

The hotel was named after the British town of Bristol. Vienna was the first to disprove that the hotel was named for the fourth Earl of Bristol. The city's coat of arms depicts a castle and a ship. Bristol was, after all, the town from which many expeditions put out to sea. The original unicorns were replaced by lions in 1923. Later, in 1932 and 1975, the unicorns appeared again. Today, the coat of arms once again depicts the lions. The motto Virtute et industria, virtue and industriousness, can be read above the entrance to our hotel. This is also the motto on the coat of arms of the town of Bristol in England.

Musicians from Rubinstein to Puccini, conductors from Herbert von Karajan to Leonard Bernstein, and even US generals after the Second World War can all attest to the charms of the Hotel Bristol, which have only increased through the years. Our most recent improvement took place in 2008, when 48 rooms were renovated. The current décor is a seamless Art Nouveau fusion of fin de siècle antiques and the state-of-the-art technology—all accentuated by our outstanding professional staff's impeccable service.
