For glitz, glamour and some of the best entertainment in the world, there's no place like Las Vegas. From casinos, bars and nightclubs, to spectacular live performances, this is a true party city – but it's also a brilliant destination for shopping, dining and even history and culture, which you can find without even leaving your hotel.

If you're eager to place a bet at the blackjack table or try your luck on the slot machines, the city's casinos are legendary; but there is far more to Sin City than gambling. Take a stroll down the famous Vegas Strip to check out the sights (or ride a double decker bus if the heat is too much) – you can see replicas of everything from an Egyptian pyramid and the Eiffel Tower, to Venetian canals complete with gondolas and even the Statue of Liberty.

For those keen to soak up some local culture, Vegas boasts an extraordinary selection of art galleries and world-class museums. Head to the Natural History Museum or the Nevada State Museum and Historical Society for a fascinating overview of the area's natural and human history; or for a more niche look at local culture, check out the Mob Museum, the Atomic Testing Museum, the Neon Museum Las Vegas, or even Madame Tussauds Wax Museum.

Shopaholics, meanwhile, can hunt for everything from big-name designer brands, to tacky souvenirs and cutting-edge fashion in independent boutiques. When you're all shopped out, break for lunch in one of the city's extravagant restaurants – you can find everything from classic American diner-style grub, to Michelin-starred fine dining in the City of Lights. Then, when the sun goes down, enjoy cocktails and dancing at a huge assortment of bars ranging from the quirky to the classic; or grab tickets for a selection of shows, from major headliner acts, to comedy, burlesque, circus and more.

Finally, if you fancy a break from the bright lights and jingling of the slot machines, take a day trip out of Las Vegas to visit the Hoover Dam, Death Valley National Park, or the hot springs at Lake Mead – or why not take a helicopter tour of the breath-taking Grand Canyon?
