Cape Town

Considered the “Mother City” of South Africa, Cape Town is the country’s oldest city, mixing historic architecture and modern conveniences. Cape Town is easily recognized for its most prominent feature, Table Mountain. While adventurous travelers can abseil down the side of the mountain, those who still want to catch the views can ride the cable cars.

Back on the ground, discover a bit of the city’s history. Visit the District Six Museum for a look into the neighborhood that once was home to minorities, merchants and immigrants. Founded in December 1994, the museum stands in honor of the nearly 60,000 people who were forced from the area during South Africa’s apartheid. Continue your tour of the city’s history with a trip to Robben Island. For 27 years, Nelson Mandela, one of the most prominent figures in South Africa’s political realm, was imprisoned on the island.

For relaxing things to do in Cape Town, look no further than the city’s many beaches. Camps Bay and Boulders Beach are two of the popular hotspots for sunbathing, swimming and snorkeling. Head about 40 minutes inland to Stellenbosch, home to over 150 wineries, to relax with a glass of wine instead.

End a day of sightseeing with a traditional South African meal. A braai (short for braaivleis, which means barbequed meat) typically consists of lamb, beef or chicken skewers, sausage and other game meats like ostrich or kudu. Head to Mama Africa Restaurant and Bar for an authentic experience featuring a live Marimba band.Considered the “Mother City” of South Africa, Cape Town is the country’s oldest city, mixing historic architecture and modern conveniences.
