Global Privacy Statement - United Kingdom and Ireland

This privacy statement (“Statement”) applies to all of the hotel brands owned or licensed by Marriott International, Inc. and its affiliates, including The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, L.L.C. (collectively, the “Marriott Group”).

We have prepared this Statement to inform you of the privacy principles that govern our use of information we obtain from our customers, including information we obtain through our websites, including Marriott.com, Ritz-Carlton.com and other websites owned or controlled by the Marriott Group (collectively, the “Websites”). As used in this Statement, the term “Authorized Licensees” means certain companies that have entered into a license or similar agreement with a Marriott Group company to sell products and services under a Marriott Group brand. Authorized Licensees are independent from the Marriott Group, and include entities such as Marriott Vacations Worldwide Corporation operator of the Marriott Vacation Club and Marriott and Ritz-Carlton Real Estate, and the issuer of the Marriott Rewards Credit Card.

Our Websites are available to visitors located throughout the world, and operated for different purposes. For instance, some may be specific to a hotel brand or property, and others may enable you to shop for travel-related products. Our Websites are generally operated from the United States in accordance with laws of the United States and visitors to our Websites should be aware that the laws of the United States may differ from those of your country of residence. Marriott International, Inc. and its Affiliates are certified to the U.S.-E.U. and U.S.-Swiss Safe Harbor Frameworks for the transfer of personal data to the United States, and such transfers are subject to our European Union and Switzerland Privacy Statement. Where we operate country-specific Websites, those Websites are operated in accordance with the laws of that specific country.

This Statement was last updated on 13th February, 2014, to describe how the privacy statement applies to all of the information we obtain from you and to update the privacy statement with respect to Marriott’s Authorized Licensees, franchisees and certain other commercial partners set out below.

Types of Personal Information We Collect

The types of personal information that we collect include:

  • Your name, gender, home and work contact details, business title, date and place of birth, nationality, passport and visa information;
  • Guest stay information, including the hotels where you have stayed, date of arrival and departure, goods and services purchased, special requests made, observations about your service preferences (including room, holiday preferences, amenities requested, facilities or any other services used);
  • Telephone numbers dialed, faxes sent/received or receipt of telephone messages when connected to the telephone services we may provide guests during their stay;
  • Your credit card details, Marriott International or Ritz-Carlton Rewards information, online user accounts details, profile or password details and any frequent flyer or travel partner program affiliation;
  • Any information necessary to fulfill special requests (e.g. preferences that require specific accommodations, purchase of goods and services);
  • Information you provide regarding your marketing preferences or in the course of participating in surveys, contests or promotional offers;
  • Information collected through the use of closed circuit television systems, card key and other security systems;
  • Contact and other relevant details concerning the employees of corporate accounts and vendors and other individuals with whom we do business (e.g., travel agents or meeting and event planners).
  • Additional contact information about you that we may obtain through third parties with whom we do business (e.g. travel agents or similar providers). For example, if we know your name and postal address, we may request your email address from your travel agent.

We may collect this information through a variety of ways, including from you directly, from our Authorized Licensees, from third parties with whom we do business (e.g., such as travel agents, airlines, event planners or similar providers).

Occasionally, you may be requested to provide personal information about others to us (for example, individuals for whom you are making a reservation). In such cases, we rely on you to obtain such other persons' consent for disclosing their information to us which we will use in accordance with the terms of this Statement.

You may always choose what personal information (if any) you wish to provide to us. If you choose not to provide certain details, however, some of your transactions with us may be impacted.

How We Use Personal Information

We may use personal information in a variety of ways, including through personal contact, via our Websites, through emails and correspondence, and through third parties, such as travel agents and other business partners. We use personal information for the purposes we have disclosed to you, or as permitted by law. In general we use personal information in order to:

  • Provide the services your request, such as to facilitate reservations, send a confirmation, send you a pre-arrival message and provide other information about the area and the hotel;
  • Provide you with information about meeting, event or celebration planning and access to specific account information for administrative purposes;
  • Send you periodic customer satisfaction, market research or quality assurance surveys;
  • Service your account and services preferences;
  • Send you offers and promotions from Marriott and its Affiliates and Authorized Licensees concerning any Marriott and Ritz-Carlton branded offers and promotions which we believe will be of interest to you including;
    • Those related to the Marriott Vacation Club, Marriott and Ritz-Carlton Real Estate;
    • The Marriott Rewards Credit Card;
    • Promotions and news such as your account information, exclusive offers, hotel openings;
    • Marriott loyalty programs and worldwide promotions;
    • Hotel specials such as personalized destinations deals and packages, last minute rates;
    • Partner offers such as financial products, car hire, club memberships, among others.;
  • Ship products, information or provide services to our customers, including sending you goods or products ordered from any of the ShopMarriott Websites;
  • Manage your shopping, Marriott/Ritz-Carlton Rewards or other account, including when you redeem points;
  • Understand your and other customers’ needs;
  • Learn about our markets and improve our products and services;
  • Comply with regulatory and legal obligations;
  • Assist with the planning of meetings and events;
  • Protect our rights and property

 

  • Marriott or Ritz-Carlton Rewards
    In addition to the above purposes, we also use personal information to:
    • Better service your account and preferences by keeping you informed of your account status and activities through printed or electronic statements;
    • Assess your entitlement to benefits;
    • Administer points earned through the Marriott Rewards Credit Card;
    • Manage your choices regarding how you wish to earn points (e.g., participating airlines and other company loyalty programs). Where you elect to earn points via participating partners, certain transaction information will be transmitted to these companies to accurately record your point and transaction activity

We use third party software to proactively initiate or offer online chat if we believe you would benefit from assistance. All information you enter via online chat may be associated to your email address and will be stored in our systems with any other information you provide and any transaction details.

Web-enabled Mobile Device
  • You can access Marriott.com from a web-enabled mobile device to find a hotel (including clicking to call the hotel), make, view or cancel a reservation or to enroll in Marriott and/or Ritz-Carlton Rewards.
  • If you have downloaded the application to your device such as a BlackBerry, iPad or iPhone you can take advantage of finding a hotel near you that is provided via Global Positioning System (GPS) technology. No personal information is retained to deliver this service. In addition, these applications will allow you to select one touch authentication if you would like to have your Marriott Rewards number and password remembered so that you do not need to enter them every time when you are using these devices to access Marriott.com.
Ritz-Carlton – Gold Standard Service

As part our commitment to Gold Standard service at our Ritz-Carlton branded properties our staff members occasionally record details of guest preferences and other personal information about our guests in order to provide a more personalized experience on future visits. This might include your meal or pillow preferences, anniversary dates or other things that make your stay more comfortable. This information is made available to our other properties around the world. If you wish to opt out of this program or have any preferences you would like us to make note of, please let us know at any time.

Disclosure of Personal Information

We may disclose personal information in the following ways:

  • Reservations
    • The personal information you provide to us for making a reservation is made available to the applicable hotel for the purpose of meeting your reservation request.
    • After your stay we retain your personal information including details of your stay, room/accommodation type and amenities used.
    • Reservations booked at properties that are operated by a franchisee or Authorized Licensee will have the details of the booking disclosed to the third party franchisee or Authorized Licensee for the sole purpose of providing the requested goods and services. In some countries we may also disclose details of your booking to the Authorized Licensee which owns the property managed by us for the sole purpose of meeting your reservation request.
  • Travel Related Services
    • To provide you with a single source for purchasing packages that include other travel-related services such as airline tickets or rental cars, including those offered by Authorized Licensees, we have entered into agreements with select reputable third-party companies that sell Marriott- or Ritz-Carlton-branded products which require them to secure your personal information and , to use it only to execute the transactions you request or to market Marriott- or Ritz-Carlton-branded vacation products. Any personal information you provide to these third parties will be controlled by each of them and is subject to their respective privacy statements and practices.
  • eFolio
    • If you are an employee or contractor of a company that participates in Marriott's eFolio Program and you use the corporate credit card that is provided to you by your employer to pay for your hotel expenses (hotel folio) at a Marriott participating property, an extract of your hotel folio detailing the goods and services provided to you during your hotel stay (as an individual traveler, or as part of a group, meeting or event) will be transferred electronically to the credit card company or its agents, who will in turn, forward that extract to your employer to facilitate the processing and tracking of the travel related expenses of their employees. Once Marriott transfers this information, our Privacy Statement will no longer apply and the handling of your personal information will be subject to the privacy policies of your employer, the relevant credit card network operator, the relevant card issuer and/or their respective subcontractors.
    • Your Marriott or Ritz-Carlton Rewards number, as entered on your reservation, acts as an eFolio identifier, allowing the transmission of your bill to your email address. If your Marriott or Ritz-Carlton Rewards number is applied to another person's room reservation, or if you make a reservation for another person and provide your email address for that reservation, that person's bill will be transmitted to your email address as well. It is your responsibility to inform that person that their bill will be emailed to you when your Marriott or Ritz-Carlton Rewards number or email address is attached to his/her reservation unless he/she makes alternative arrangements with a front desk associate during the stay.
  • Marriott Rewards Information
    • We will only disclose member and customer information within the Marriott Group, to person(s) authorized by you, to Marriott’s Authorized Licensees or to other third parties as set out in this statement.
  • Marriott and Ritz-Carlton Real Estate
    • Ritz-Carlton is pleased to present luxury residences in various locations. In addition, we also offer fractional ownership interests in a variety of resorts. As set out in this Privacy Statement, Marriott and its Authorized Licensees may use customer’s personal information for the purpose of marketing Marriott and Ritz-Carlton’s luxury residences and fractional ownership interests. If you decide to purchase either a residence or fractional ownership interest, you will be provided a specific disclosure around the personal information required to complete the transaction and the uses and protection of that information.
  • Authorized Licensees
    • Personal information may be disclosed to Authorized Licensees, including Marriott Vacations Worldwide operator of Marriott Vacation Club, for the limited purpose of marketing and operating the business that they license from Marriott or Ritz-Carlton or marketing their Marriott- or Ritz-Carlton-branded products and services or for the purpose of providing you with offers and promotions.
    • If you connect to a separate website operated by an Authorized Licensee, including the Marriott Vacation Club, the handling of your personal information will be subject to their respective privacy policies.
  • Third Party Service Providers/Processors:
    • Marriott and Ritz-Carlton each use the services of third party processors, such as market researchers, fulfillment houses, email service providers and mail houses that process mail and communications for the Marriott Group, and including in some cases, for Authorized Licensees. These parties are contractually prohibited from using personal information for any purpose other than for the purpose Marriott specifies.

We may disclose your personal information in relation to the reorganization, sale or disposal of all or a part of our business or assets, joint ventures and related business transactions, including in relation to audit or reporting and other regulatory requirements. Any successor or assign may use your personal information for the same reasons as set out in this Statement.

Marriott and Ritz-Carlton will disclose personal information without your permission when required by law, or in good faith belief that such action is necessary to investigate or protect against harmful activities to Marriott and Ritz-Carlton guests, visitors, associates, or property (including our Websites), or to others.

Cookies and IP Addresses

The Marriott Group and our third party marketing partners may use cookies, invisible pixels, local shared objects (i.e., persistent cookies) and web beacons to obtain information about Websites users. Cookies are small text files that are placed on a computer or mobile device when you visit a website or use an app. Our Websites may receive and store certain information automatically based on your browser settings, which may include your browser type and operating system, the web pages viewed, IP addresses or unique device identifiers associated with mobiles devices, and sites visited before or after visiting our Websites.

You can set your computer to warn you each time a cookie is sent or turn off all cookies (except Flash cookies) through your browser. Check your browser's Help menu or your built-in mobile device settings to find out how. Some mobile devices store cookies not only in areas connected to the browser, but also in areas that are app-specific, which cannot be controlled by the browser settings. Check your app settings options on your mobile device to find out how to manage or delete cookies that may be stored in these other areas. If you do not accept cookies, some features, services or activities that are available on our Websites may be adversely affected and you may be unable to perform certain transactions, use certain functionality, and access certain content.

We use the following types of cookies on our Websites and apps:

  • Session cookies which are automatically deleted once you close your browser.
  • HTTP request header information in order to make our Websites function correctly and to personalize content presented to you, better understand how visitors use our Website and how we can better meet your needs.
  • Throughout the online reservation process to remember dates used in hotel searches, check room availability and fulfill the reservation.
  • Allow registered users to sign in without typing their email, Marriott and Ritz-Carlton Rewards number each time.
  • Measure usage of various pages on our Website to help us make our information more personalized and easily accessible.
  • Provide functionality such as online reservations, Marriott or Ritz-Carlton Rewards transactions, and other functionality that we believe would be of interest and value to you.
  • Track customer response to Marriott and Ritz-Carlton advertisements and Website content.
  • Determine your browser’s ability to receive HTML email messages to determine the appropriate format for you to receive and read email.
  • Know how many users open an email and allow our service provider to compile aggregated statistics about an email campaign for us.
  • Serve ads through third-party advertising technology when you visit our Website and sites upon which we advertise. In the course of serving our advertisements to you, unique third-party persistent cookies, clear gifs or beacon gifs may be placed on your computer or device, provided by our ad-serving providers, to help manage our online advertising and which recognize when a device visits our Websites, to learn which banner ads bring users to our Websites and to track whether a reservation is made. The information our ad-serving providers and we collect through this technology is not personally identifiable but is used to create a profile which allows the ad-serving provider to serve adverts targeted towards you and your interests across the ad-serving network.

The Marriott Group and its third-party service providers use web beacons and pixel tags to:

  • Track customer response to the Marriott Group advertisements and Website content;
  • Determine users ability to receive HTML-based email messages and know how many users open an email and allow our service provider to compile aggregated statistics about an email campaign for us; and
  • Allow us to better target interactive advertising, enhance customer support and site usability, and provide offers and promotions that we believe would be of interest to you.

Do Not Track Signals: 
Some web browsers offer a "Do Not Track" ("DNT") signal that is a HTTP header field indicating your preference regarding tracking or cross-site user tracking. We currently do not recognize DNT signals; however, as stated above, we do allow you to exercise some choice in the information collected by adjusting your browser’s cookie settings. As stated above, we also work with third parties that use tracking technologies on our Web sites in order to provide tailored advertisements on our behalf and on behalf of other advertisers across the Internet. These companies may collect information about your activity on our sites and your interaction with our advertising and other communications, and use this information to determine which ads you see on third party websites and applications. Children’s Privacy

Our Websites are not intended for children and we do not knowingly solicit or collect personal information from children. If we are notified or discover that a child under the age of 13 has submitted personal information to any of our Websites, we will take reasonable steps to delete the information. We do present information regarding The Marriott Kids program on our Websites for the reference of adults that are interested in activities at our locations for children.

Marketing Communications

Our intention is that you should only receive email communications that will be useful to you and that you want to receive, so we provide you the ability to define and modify your mailing preferences online at any time including unsubscribing from all marketing communications, offers and promotions and research surveys.

You can unsubscribe from any of our email programs by visiting the unsubscribe page or by following the instructions in relation to opting out of future emails in any email you receive from us.
You may also opt-out online of Marriott Rewards and The Ritz-Carlton Rewards emails  by updating your Rewards account, or sending a letter to Internet Customer Care - Unsubscribe, 1818 North 90 Street, Omaha, Nebraska 68114-1315 USA. Please allow 10 business days for us to process your opt-out.

Security of Personal Information

We treat the personal information you provide to us as confidential and take reasonable steps, including standard industry safeguards to protection your personal information from accidental deletion or loss and unauthorized access, disclosure or modification. When you submit personal information to us via our Websites, it is transferred over a Secured Sockets Layer (SSL) connection, provided you are using a SSL enabled browser or device.

Careers at Marriott

Marriott uses select private label databases and tools hosted by third parties on their Websites to collect personal information from individuals that wish to be considered for potential employment. Personal information you provide to us via these private label services is accessible and confidential to Marriott. By submitting your application and providing this personal information, you understand and agree that your personal information will be transferred to the United States and may also be transferred to additional countries, other than your country of origin, for consideration for employment.

Marriott will not use your personal information for any purpose other than to allow you to conduct automated job searches or determine your qualifications for potential employment with Marriott. The third-party service providers located in the United States or United Kingdom are prohibited from using your personal information for any purpose other than collecting it on our behalf.

California Residents

If you are a customer who resides in the State of California, you have the right to request from Marriott a list of third parties with whom we share personal information about you for their own direct marketing purposes during the previous calendar year. Although Marriott/Ritz-Carlton does not share personal information with unrelated third parties for their own direct marketing purposes, many of our hotels, which are separately owned or operated by franchisees of Marriott, are permitted to use the personal information they receive from Marriott to market the Marriott hotels that they franchise. Residents of the EEA and Switzerland

Marriott International, Inc. and The Ritz-Carlton Hotel Company, L.L.C. are established in the United States, and the servers upon which our site is hosted and on which hotel bookings are processed are located in the United States. The laws of the United States may differ from those of your country of residence and may not offer the same level of protection for personal information. Marriott International, Inc. and its Affiliates are certified to the U.S.-E.U. and U.S.-Swiss Safe Harbor Frameworks for the transfer of personal data to the United States, and such transfers are subject to our European Union and Switzerland Privacy Statement as well as to our safe harbor European and Switzerland Privacy Statement.

Marriott’s managed and franchised properties are located around the world. As you would expect, where you book to stay in a hotel outside the country in which you live, personal data will be transferred to Marriott’s property manager or franchisee together with other affiliates and Authorized Licensees located in the country in which you are staying so that your reservation is fulfilled.

Countries located outside the EEA and Switzerland do not have laws in place which provide the same level of protection for personally identifiable information as provided for in the EEA and Switzerland although such data is covered by Marriott’s own policies and procedures which are designed to ensure an adequate level of protection.

Dubai Financial Centre

In relation to personal data collected out of our Ritz-Carlton property in Dubai International Financial Centre, please note that this personal data may be transferred to our other properties in the United Arab Emirates and other jurisdictions which may not be regarded as adequately protecting personal data. When you check in at this property you expressly consent to such transfer.
