Description

The Imperial War Museum North is one of the branches of the Imperial War Museum in the northern part of England. The museum is housed inside a magnificent structure which was designed by Daniel Libeskind and was opened to the public in July 2002. Most of the permanent collection of the museum is housed inside the first floor gallery of the Earth Shard, comprised of dramatic artifacts such as the Russian T-34 tank, a World War II 18-pounder field gun and the Marine Corps AV-8B Harrier jet as well as smaller artifacts. The walls of the museum are used as screens for more than 60 slide projectors placed inside the museum to showcase more than 1,500 photographs and audio-visual presentations related to war. Another section inside the Earth Shard hosts temporary exhibits of artworks of World War I and II by various war artists. With more than two hundred thousand visitors every year, the museum is amongst the most visited in England.
