Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta
Since 1972, the nine-day Albuquerque International Balloon Fiesta has taken place in early October. The fiesta lasts nine days and has about 750 balloons in all shapes and sizes. It's the largest balloon fiesta in the world and is also considered the most photographed event in the world.
Even if you miss the annual International Balloon Fiesta, there's no reason not to celebrate this world capitol of ballooning. The museum, opened in 2005, houses creative and technological exhibits focused on a wide variety of ballooning. The exhibition space occupies 25,000 square feet. Roof decks, balconies and a large plaza in front of the balloon gallery allow for spectacular viewing of ballooning events and the Sandia Mountains.
Sandia Mountain & Rio Grande River
Whether skiing at Sandia Peak Ski Area in winter or hiking in the 37,232 acre Sandia Wilderness Area in summer, the Sandia Mountains provide Albuquerque with an outdoor paradise. As a landmark in the spiritual universe of many traditional Indian beliefs, Sandia Mountain is regularly used for ceremonies by the people of the Sandia Pueblo.
Sandia Peak Tramway
The world’s longest aerial tramway transports you above deep canyons and breathtaking terrain. At sunset the desert skies produce a spectacular array of color which can be seen from the observation deck atop 10,378 foot Sandia Peak in the Cibola National Forest.
Sandia Peak Ski Area
In the winter Sandia Mountain offers great skiing at the Sandia Peak Ski Area. Ski, snowboard, check out the Scrapyard Terrain Park, and enjoy amazing views, all 45 minutes from your room.
