Austria’s capital is back in fashion, with visitors of all ages and interests checking in to Vienna hotels. The grand Hapsburg architecture, regal parks on the banks of the Danube and famous coffee houses – and the classical music heritage of Mozart and Strauss – are still very much part of this city’s cultural beat. But Vienna has also found its progressive side, featuring a busy calendar of contemporary music and art festivals along with seriously cool nightlife.
Fortunately for visitors the city’s attractions are all close together, making walking to and from the hotels in Vienna the best way to see the sights. Many museums mix the traditional with the perplexing – must-visits include the Leopold Museum, Kunsthalle Wien and Museum Moderner Kunst (MUMOK). These are set amid some fine cafés and restaurants within the MuseumsQuartier (MQ).
If this is your first time in Vienna, take a horse-drawn carriage ride or the circuitous tram route 1 around the Ringstrasse (ringroad) of the splendid inner city – your hotel in Vienna will help you. Central Vienna hotels are also great for shoppers. For upmarket fashion, head to the elegant Graben or Kärntner Strasse. For hip galleries and funky boutiques, explore the Neubau (7th) district.
